Since its launch in India in 2017, Amazon Prime Video focused on first-class movie contents which included both Bollywood and regional movies and created original series in the Indian languages. For its Hollywood content, Amazon Prime Video has previously partnered with AMC Studio, Warner Bros., Paramount and Lion’s Gate. The latest deal with Disney has further enhanced its list of Hollywood content for its subscribers.

This move has placed Amazon Prime Video in a much more competitive position with Netflix India, which attracted a huge subscriber base until now and also with over thirty other ‘over the top’ (OTT) video on demand platforms. With the new partnership between Amazon and Disney, Amazon Prime Video subscribers in India will be able to enjoy the newest TV series straight away after they premier in the U.S.

Inhumans and Runaways amongst the new TV shows

The seven TV shows that are to be added to the video streaming service include four latest Marvel series, two of which are already available to stream – the live-action series, ‘Inhumans’, which is about a race of altered human beings and ‘Runaways’, which tells the story of a group of teenagers who find out that their parents are Super Villains masquerading as common people. One of the other shows to be included in the list is ‘Cloaks and Daggers’ which is about two young adults discovering newly acquired superpowers. The name of the fourth show has not been officially declared yet but it is possible that it will be Marvel’s ‘New Warrior’ which is now in pre-production and going to premiere very soon.

The three shows by ABC studios include the science fiction thriller ‘The Crossing’, the comedy series ‘Alone Together’ and the action drama series ‘Station 19’. Apart from these new series, viewers will be able to watch complete seasons of other extremely popular ABC titles like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Criminal Minds’, ‘Desperate Housewives’, ‘Scrubs’ and ‘Scandal’.

Both Marvel and ABC are owned by the American film producing and distributing company Walt Disney Co., the Indian wing of which is Disney India. Disney had announced of ending its licensing deal with Netflix India last year, which was streaming TV shows owned by Disney since its launch in 2016. Hotstar India owned by 21st Century Fox’s Star streams live action and animated movies owned by Disney. Disney also signed an agreement to buy 21st Century Fox and thereby planning to strengthen its base in the video streaming market of India. Amazon Prime Video of Amazon India is the latest video streaming service to sign a contract with it. However, the financial details of this pact have not been divulged yet. This deal is a significant step for Disney since it is planning to launch its own video streaming services shortly.

Mr. Vijay Subramanium, Director, Content, Amazon Prime Video said in the press release statement, “We are elated to bring quality content from Marvel and ABC to our Prime members. Whether it’s binging on past seasons of an old favourite or discovering your new favourite show, we believe that everyone will find something to enjoy”. He also added, “With upcoming shows, we are thrilled to make the content available in India, immediately after the US premiere.”

Amrita Pandey, Regional Head – Media Distribution and OTT, South Asia for Disney, was quoted saying, “It’s critical for us to make our diverse content available to fans everywhere. This opportunity with Amazon Prime Video in India, allows us to bring some of our fan favourite shows from Marvel and ABC to Indian audiences on a device of their choice and convenience.”
