Moto G was a huge success for Motorola and it sold in crazy numbers as soon as it was launched in India. The price was too good to be true for the device. Then came in the Moto E which is one of the best budget devices we have seen in quite a long time. Most devices in the budget segment were missing something or the other but this one took care of all the aspects and provide a good user experience. To compete with this device, Micromax launched the Unite 2 in the same price bracket and Lava Launched the Iris X1. We put these three devices against each other to figure out which one of them is worth buying.
The entire three devices have got different display sizes so the dimensions vary widely. Moto E is smallest of them all as it comes with a 4.3 inch display. The device is rounded on the back like the Moto G. the bezels around the display are fatter than the Moto G so the dimensions haven’t dropped considerably. It is a bit fat at 12.3 mm but as the size of device is small, it doesn’t feel like fat. While it is quite small, it isn’t exactly light. The front face looks a bit dull due to the fat bezels and the speaker below the display looks quite prominent.
The Iris X1 from Lava looks better. It is slimmer at just 8.9 mm thick. It looks premium as compared to the other two here and feels nice to touch. The flat front and back panel give it a nice look. A wide metal band runs around the side of the device and looks very much like what you would find on the iPhone 5 or 5S. It doesn’t rely on the on screen keys so there are capacitive keys below the display. Despite being larger than the Moto E, it is lighter than the Moto E by a few grams.
The Micromax Unite 2 is even bigger than the Iris X1. It doesn’t look or feel as good. The front is simple with three capacitive keys sitting near the bottom. The gap between the display and these keys is a bit more than usual. The back is made out of plastic and it feels a bit flimsy. It is available in multiple colours and the colour is imparted by the plastic wraparound shell. The Iris X1 is definitely the best looking device here.
Both the Micromax Unite 2 and Iris X1 have got large displays for their display resolution. The Lava has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels on a 4.5 inch display. This gives it a pixel density of 218 ppi which is quite low. Things are even worse on the Micromax Unite 2. It has got a 480 x 800 pixel resolution on a 4.7 inch display. The pixel density goes even below 200 ppi which is very poor. You can easily spot the pixels and the low resolution renders the large display size worthless. Small texts are not readable easily and you would have to zoom in every time so that the font isn’t fuzzy.
The Moto E on the other hand has a smaller display, 4.3 inches to be precise and has a relatively higher resolution. It has a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels which gives a pixel density of 256 ppi on this display size. While this isn’t a very impressive resolution, it feels like a huge upgrade when coming from the other two devices.

The Iris X1 from Lava runs a quad core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. It runs a Broadcom chipset and has got a Broadcom VideoCore IV graphic processor. The Micromax device runs on a Mediatek chipset and has a quad core processor clocked at 1.3 GHz. Both these device come with 1 GB of RAM. The Moto E has got a dual core processor running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 chipset. It has also got 1 GB of RAM like the other two devices. While it is just a dual core, the performance is pretty good. All of your social networking and messaging apps would run without any trouble. On paper, the Micromax is most powerful device here.
All the three devices offer similar level of connectivity options. All three devices here are dual SIM device and support 3G networks, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and micro USB 2.0. All the devices have got micro SD card slots and support memory up to 32 GB.
The Iris X1 comes with an 8 megapixel camera with Autofocus and LED flash. The other two devices come with 5 megapixel cameras. While the Micromax device has got autofocus, the Moto E misses out on that as well. It misses out on a flash as well. The camera on Moto E is pretty basic and it is the same story with the camera interface. Touching the display would shoot an image. You can drag around a box to set the exposure accordingly. The camera on Micromax unite 2 isn’t very good either but the autofocus feature helps a bit. On the Lava Iris X1, the higher resolution helps a bit. The images are clearer and you can capture some nice shots when the light is decent. The Moto E hasn’t got a secondary camera either. The other two devices have both got 2 megapixel secondary cameras.
We really liked the design and camera of the Lave Iris X1 but its display is a let-down. What is the point of having a good camera if you can’t even view the images properly? The Micromax Unite 2 has got a display that is even worse. The Moto E has got a better display but has got a less powerful processor. The camera is quite dull as well. Our pick here would definitely be the Moto E because it is good as an everyday device and with that, you will also get regular software updates which might not happen with the other two manufacturers.
