Earlier this month, the homegrown smartphone maker XOLO launched a new selfie-centric smartphone, the XOLO Opus 3. While it packs a decent set of specs, its main USP lies in the front camera. It carries a 5-megapixel snapper at the front with 88-degree wide angle. Such a wide-angle lens allows you to capture more area while taking selfies, or add more people while taking group selfies.
However, it’s always better to look out for the options before making a final decision. The XOLO Opus 3 is undoubtedly a cool smartphone for selfie-crazy people, but is it the only option available for that matter? Or are there better alternatives in the similar price range? To answer these, we decided to compare the XOLO Opus 3 with five closest alternatives – Lava Iris Selfie 50, Intex Aqua i5HD, Panasonic Eluga S, Obi Hornbill S551 and Microsoft Lumia 535. But before we discuss these alternatives, let’s have a quick look on the core specifications of the XOLO Opus 3.
XOLO Opus 3 key features
The XOLO Opus 3 comes with a 5-inch HD (720 x 1,280 pixels) IPS LCD multi-touch display. While the HD resolution renders crisp images, the IPS feature provides wide viewing angles. Running Android v4.4.2 KitKat OS, the Opus 3 is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582M quad-core processor accompanied by 1GB RAM. XOLO has equipped the device with a special feature called Float Task which lets you access multiple apps at once to facilitate multi-tasking.
As highlighted, it’s the camera department where the Opus 3 steals the show. In addition to the wide-angle 5MP front camera, the smartphone features an 8MP auto focus primary camera with Sony Exmor R lens and LED flash, and features like HDR, geo-tagging, face detection etc. The Opus 3 has an inbuilt storage of 8GB, which is further expandable up to 32GB. It packs 2,500mAh li-ion battery, and the regular set of connectivity features.
The XOLO Opus 3 carries an official price tag of Rs 8499, but is available with retailers on a discounted price of Rs 7999.
Comparison – XOLO OPUS 3 vs Lava Iris Selfie 50 vs Intex Aqua i5HD vs Panasonic Eluga S vs Obi Hornbill S551 vs Microsoft Lumia 535
Priced at Rs 7499, theLava Iris Selfie 50 can be termed as the closest competitor to the Opus 3. While the core specs are almost same, the Iris Selfie 50 is more effective when it comes to low light photography. The smartphone not only carries dual LED flash at rear, but is also one of the rare devices to have an LED flash unit at the front. On the downside, the display carries an inferior resolution of 480×854 pixels.
The Intex Aqua i5 HD is another good option for selfie-lovers. Available for Rs 6999, it takes photography to the next level with a 13MP primary shooter. On the downside, you need to stick with the dated Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and adjust with only 4GB of inbuilt storage. Avoid if you don’t want your device to run out of memory every time you try to install heavy apps or games.
At Rs 9999, the Panasonic Eluga S can be a bit costlier alternative, but comes with many advantages over the Opus 3. It packs a range of smart features including Pop-i-player, Gesture control, Music café, Kwik Lock etc. However, the feature which sets it apart from the lot is the Blink Play, which can activate the front camera for a 3-second countdown with just a blink of your eyes.
Priced around Rs 9000, the recently launched Obi Hornbill S551 is another great alternative to the Opus 3. Besides a larger display and great design enhanced with a dotted leather-like back cover, the Hornbill S551 also features a 13-megapixel primary camera.
Last but not least, the Microsoft Lumia 535 is an alternative unique in many aspects. Powered by Windows Phone 8.1 (with Denim update), it features a wide-angle front lens loaded with Lumia selfie app, which lets you enhance your selfies with filters and share them easily with friends. It also brings you the Cortana voice assistant which is much smarter than the regular voice assistant found on the other smartphones in this list. On the downside, it carries a regular 5MP camera at the back.
